Rajnath Singh Emphasizes Importance of High-End Technologies for India’s Defence and Innovation Goals

New Delhi: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the critical role of high-end technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing in strengthening India’s defence capabilities and fostering innovation. Addressing the inaugural session of the Indian National Academy of Engineering’s (INAE) Annual Convention at IIT Delhi on December 19, 2024, Rajnath Singh urged scientists and engineers to harness these cutting-edge technologies to drive India’s development forward.

Rajnath Singh emphasized that these advanced technologies are set to revolutionize various sectors, and India must focus on mastering them to ensure the nation’s welfare and progress. He noted that the government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has accelerated the pace of self-reliance in defence, moving away from reliance on imported technologies and towards indigenous solutions.

“We are now exporting weapons that once saw India importing. This remarkable shift is due to the collective efforts of the public and private sectors, academia, and innovators,” said the Defence Minister. He highlighted initiatives such as Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and Technology Development Fund (TDF) that are driving this transformation, encouraging young talent to innovate and contribute to national security.

Rajnath Singh lauded the role of institutions like IIT Delhi in fostering a stronger partnership between academia, research organizations, and the industry. He stressed the importance of establishing an organic relationship that enhances technological collaboration, echoing the need for India’s engineering community to remain rooted in its heritage while embracing modern advancements.

“India is at the forefront of innovation and start-ups, driven by a young and passionate workforce. Our government supports this spirit with funding and infrastructure to ensure that innovation continues to flourish,” he added.

During the convention, the Defence Minister visited an exhibition showcasing technologies developed through defence-industry-academia collaboration. He appreciated the contributions of Masters students and PhD researchers who presented their work, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent.

The three-day convention brings together over 400 engineers, technologists, and professionals from academia, industry, and research organizations, fostering discussions and sharing insights on emerging technological advancements.

Rajnath Singh concluded his address with a call for engineers and innovators to draw inspiration from India’s rich heritage while building a future driven by cutting-edge technology. “Let’s illuminate the path of the future with the light of our history and ensure that our combined efforts lead to the realization of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’,” he said.
