New Delhi: Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram, praised the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) for its proactive initiatives in implementing and monitoring the Forest Rights Act using its constitutional powers. Speaking at the 22nd Foundation Day celebrations of the Commission, he highlighted its critical role in protecting the rights and ensuring the development of Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities.
Oram reaffirmed the commitment of the Tribal Ministry, in collaboration with the NCST, to ensuring a better and dignified life, social justice, and holistic development for Scheduled Tribes. He spoke about various initiatives undertaken by the Central Government, such as the Eklavya Model Residential Schools, which aim to improve educational opportunities for tribal students, along with pre- and post-matric scholarships and the National Overseas Scholarship program. He also highlighted the government’s initiative to identify 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) across the country for focused development programs.
Addressing the gathering, NCST Chairperson, Antar Singh Arya, spoke about the Commission’s recent activities, stating that since assuming office, the current NCST team has been actively visiting Scheduled Tribe communities across India. He emphasized that the Commission successfully implemented a 100-day action plan to review progress at the state, district, and public sector undertaking levels. He noted that the Commission remains steadfast in its efforts to safeguard the rights of Scheduled Tribes, ensuring their access to government programs and policies.
The event also featured speeches by NCST members Nirupam Chakma, Dr. Asha Lakra, and Jatothu Hussain, who shared their experiences and insights on the Commission’s work. Among the prominent attendees were Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), and Vaddepally Ramchander, Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), along with other dignitaries, including chairpersons, members, and secretaries of various national commissions. Representatives of Scheduled Tribe communities and university students also participated in the celebrations.
During the inaugural session, NCST Secretary, Puneet Kumar Goel, welcomed the guests and provided an overview of the Commission’s key activities, highlighting successful cases and interventions that have positively impacted tribal communities. Following the inaugural session, several discussions were held on the progress, development, skill enhancement, and entrepreneurship opportunities for tribal communities. Experts from the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), academicians from Delhi University, and policymakers shared insights on addressing skill gaps, fostering self-reliance, and supporting tribal entrepreneurship.
