Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi flagged off a special pilgrimage train from Bhubaneswar Railway Station on Friday, marking a significant moment for the Barishtha Nagrika Tirtha Yatra Yojana. This flagship initiative by the Odisha government is designed to fulfill the spiritual aspirations of economically disadvantaged senior citizens, including those living below the poverty line.
The inaugural journey witnessed 775 senior citizens from Khordha, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Dhenkanal embarking on a sacred tour to Shirdi and Nashik, two of Maharashtra’s most revered pilgrimage destinations. This effort reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the spiritual and emotional well-being of its elderly citizens.
In its expanded form, the scheme aims to benefit 8,000 senior citizens this year, with pilgrimage tours planned to iconic destinations such as Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Kolkata, Kamakhya Temple in Assam, Ayodhya, and Varanasi, in addition to Shirdi and Nashik. The tours will be conducted in 10 phases, with departure points set at Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rayagada, and Balasore.
To ensure the convenience of the pilgrims, the government has arranged transportation from their villages to the railway stations. Comprehensive support, including accommodation, local transportation, and meals, has also been provided to create a hassle-free and fulfilling experience for the participants.
Beyond the Barishtha Nagrika Tirtha Yatra Yojana, the state government has demonstrated its dedication to the spiritual needs of its citizens by deploying four state-of-the-art buses for the world-famous Mahakumbh Mela. Seven special trains have also been arranged from Odisha for the event, further underscoring the administration’s efforts to facilitate access to significant religious gatherings.
The Barishtha Nagrika Tirtha Yatra Yojana stands as a testament to the Odisha government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and honoring the cultural and spiritual heritage of its people. Through such initiatives, the government continues to bridge generational gaps and foster a sense of community and care for its senior citizens.
