Amstelveen: India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 suffered a major setback after the men’s team went down 1-3 to co-hosts the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium.
The defeat leaves India without a point in the pool, while the Netherlands moved to the top with six points, including three carried forward from the first stage. India now face a must-win situation against Argentina, who are also yet to open their account.
England, meanwhile, have three points. A victory for England against Argentina would end India’s mathematical chances of advancing to the semi-finals.
The contest remained tightly fought for more than two quarters, with neither side able to find the breakthrough.
India started aggressively, applying a high press and making early incursions into the Dutch circle. The hosts gradually settled into the contest and began controlling possession, forcing the Indian defence to work hard.
The Netherlands earned the first penalty corner in the 13th minute, but Sumit produced an excellent rush to block Jip Janssen’s flick. India continued to defend resolutely, with Manpreet Singh also making crucial interventions in the second quarter.
India had their best opportunity of the first half in the 23rd minute when Dilpreet Singh found himself in a promising position inside the circle. However, his hurried attempt was saved by the Dutch goalkeeper.
The first half ended goalless, with the Netherlands having enjoyed greater possession while India continued to search for their first penalty corner.
India finally earned a penalty corner in the 35th minute following a successful video referral. Harmanpreet Singh took the flick, but the Dutch rushers blocked the attempt. A second referral gave India another chance, but Harmanpreet’s effort went wide.
The breakthrough finally came in the 41st minute when Duco Telgenkamp capitalised on a defensive lapse to put the Netherlands ahead.
India responded by earning another penalty corner, but Harmanpreet was again denied as the Dutch defence stood firm.
India continued to push forward in the final quarter, creating opportunities through penalty corners and attacking moves.
A move initiated by Sanjay in the 47th minute resulted in another penalty corner. Amit Rohidas took the direct hit, which was saved, while a subsequent penalty corner gave Harmanpreet another opportunity. His flick appeared to be heading towards the target, but goalkeeper Derk Meijer made an outstanding save.
The Netherlands doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Tjep Hoedemakers deflected a precise centre from Koen Bijen past goalkeeper Mohith HS.
India refused to surrender and earned another penalty corner soon afterwards. After an initial block, the ball struck a foot, giving India another opportunity.
This time, Harmanpreet Singh made no mistake, sending his flick past Meijer to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and briefly revive India’s hopes.
However, the Netherlands responded almost immediately.
Four minutes later, a midfield turnover allowed the hosts to launch a swift counter-attack. Thijs van Dam completed the move with a composed finish to restore the Netherlands’ two-goal advantage.
India pushed forward in the closing stages but could not break through the Dutch defence again. The hosts managed the final minutes effectively to secure a 3-1 victory.
The result leaves India with no points from their opening Stage 2 match and facing a difficult route to the semi-finals.
India will next take on Argentina, knowing that only a victory can keep their hopes alive. Even then, their qualification will depend on the results of the remaining Pool E matches.
