Odisha Teacher Padaraj Umakanta Nayak Selected for National Teacher Award 2026

Bhubaneswar: Odisha teacher Padaraj Umakanta Nayak, Headmaster of Government High School, Alipingal, has been selected for the National Teacher Award 2026 for his contribution to school education, innovative teaching practices and promotion of science learning among students.

Nayak, who began his teaching career as an Assistant Teacher at Marichpur High School, Baramundali, on February 20, 2004, has spent more than two decades working to make classroom learning more practical, engaging and student-centric.

His contribution to educational research has also been recognised through his participation in academic forums. He has presented research papers on pedagogy of education at two international and four national conferences, reflecting his continued engagement with innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

One of Nayak’s notable contributions is his book “Bigyanagarare Parikhya”, developed as a resource aligned with the State Board Science textbook.

The book focuses on simple experiments that students can conduct using materials available in school laboratories as well as at home. By connecting scientific concepts with hands-on activities, the resource aims to make science learning more accessible and enjoyable for students.

Nayak has also developed several e-content resources and conducted lessons through YouTube live classes organised by the School and Mass Education Department, Government of Odisha.

His teaching methodology incorporates a range of approaches, including Project-Based Learning, Research-Based Learning, hands-on activities, technology-based learning, game-based learning and learning through art, dance and yoga.

These methods have been aimed at moving beyond conventional classroom instruction and encouraging students to learn through experimentation, creativity and active participation.

As a State Resource Person in Physical Science and Mathematics, Nayak has also contributed to strengthening the academic capacity of teachers and promoting innovative approaches to science and mathematics education.

Nayak’s efforts have extended to nurturing scientific talent among students. Under his guidance, one student participated in an international-level science event, while eight students took part in national-level science events.

His work has helped encourage students to explore science beyond textbooks and develop greater interest in research, experimentation and scientific activities.

The National Teacher Award adds to a series of recognitions received by Nayak for his contribution to education. He was earlier honoured with the State Mukhyamantri Shikshya Puraskar-2023 and the Prakruti Bandhu Award by the Government of Odisha.

His selection for the national honour recognises his sustained efforts to promote innovative pedagogy, experiential learning and science education while contributing to the professional development of fellow teachers.
