New Delhi: The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) took a significant leap towards technological advancement in rural development by formalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi). The MoU, signed by Amit Kataria, Joint Secretary, MoRD, and Prof. Manabendra Saharia, IIT Delhi, aims to strengthen their partnership in the applications of geospatial technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The signing ceremony was attended by Shailesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, MoRD, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, along with other officials from both organizations.
The collaboration focuses on the implementation of the “BhuPRAHARI” project, an ambitious initiative designed to harness the potential of ground and space-based geospatial technologies, combined with AI, to monitor and manage assets under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The project, to be executed by the HydroSense lab led by Prof. Manabendra Saharia, reflects a shared commitment to leveraging technology for the improvement of rural development processes.
The MoU signing ceremony saw officials from both MoRD and IIT Delhi emphasizing the significance of this partnership in enhancing the operational efficiency and transparency of MGNREGA projects. The integration of cutting-edge technologies is expected to revolutionize the planning, monitoring, and execution of rural development projects, ensuring accountability and optimizing resource allocation.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Rangan Banerjee highlighted IIT Delhi’s dedication to applying scientific research and technological innovations for social good. The MoU marks the initiation of a collaborative effort to explore and apply technological solutions to the challenges faced by rural communities. This partnership sets a precedent for how academic institutions and government bodies can work together to foster innovation and drive socio-economic progress.
The BhuPRAHARI project is set to commence immediately, with both MoRD and IIT Delhi expressing eagerness to translate this vision into a tangible reality that will bring about positive transformation in rural development.
