Indian Light Tank Achieves High-Altitude Trial Success, Demonstrates Remarkable Accuracy and Mobility

New Delhi: The Indian Light Tank (ILT), a 25-ton class armored fighting vehicle designed for high-altitude operations, achieved a significant milestone by completing successful high-altitude firing trials at an altitude exceeding 4,200 meters. The trials, conducted at a remote high-altitude location, showcased the ILT’s precision and adaptability across various ranges.

This milestone follows the Phase I trials conducted in a desert environment in September 2024. The ILT, developed by the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE)—a Chennai-based laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)—is a critical project under the Provisional Staff Qualitative Requirements of the Indian Army. The vehicle is being manufactured by industry partner Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Precision Engineering & Systems.

The ILT is a 25-ton class armoured vehicle tailored for the unique operational requirements of high-altitude terrains. Its development—from design to realization and high-altitude demonstration—was accomplished in a record time of three years.

The tank’s airlift capability was also validated by the Indian Air Force, underscoring its potential for rapid deployment in remote, road-inaccessible regions. This mobility feature is expected to bolster India’s defence posture in challenging terrains.

With the successful completion of both desert and high-altitude trials, the ILT will now undergo additional performance assessments before being offered for user trials by the Indian Army.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the DRDO, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and L&T for their collaborative efforts and the successful high-altitude trials. He stated, “The development of the ILT marks a significant step in strengthening our defence capabilities, especially in strategically critical high-altitude regions.”

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, congratulated the team behind the ILT for their achievement, emphasizing the role of industry collaboration in achieving this milestone.

The ILT’s high-altitude capabilities, coupled with its airlift readiness and precision performance, position it as a game-changer in India’s defence arsenal, particularly for operations in challenging and remote terrains.
