Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins silver medal for India on the first day of Tokyo Olympics

India opened its medal tally on the first day of Tokyo Olympics 2020 through weightlifter Mirabai Chanu. Competing in the women’s 49-kg category, Chanu wins silver medal while China’s Zhihu Hou bagged gold.

She lifted 84kg and 87 kg successfully in snatch, but failed to lift 89kg which kept her in second position in this round. Hou lifted 94kg to make an Olympic record. Chanu lifted 115kg in clean and jerk to create a new Olympic record.

Chanu’s silver medal win on the first day is a record for India, as no Indian had won any medal on the very first day of an Olympic before.
