Chennai: A 22-year-old American student was detained at Chennai International Airport on Thursday after a satellite phone—banned under Indian law—was found in his possession during routine security checks.
The incident occurred just before the departure of a Scoot Airlines flight to Singapore at around 12:30 am. The passenger, identified as Oakley Jackson, was traveling to Australia via Singapore after a tourist visit to India, which included a stop in Delhi before reaching Chennai.
Security personnel discovered the device in Jackson’s luggage and flagged it immediately. Satellite phones are considered a national security risk in India due to their ability to bypass regular telecom networks and are strictly regulated.
Upon interrogation, Jackson stated that he was unaware of the restriction and had been carrying the device since he left the US, passing through Delhi without incident. However, airport authorities did not accept the explanation, citing national regulations and the need to investigate potential misuse.
As a result, Jackson’s flight ticket was canceled, and the device was confiscated. He was handed over to the airport police for further questioning.
Investigators are now trying to determine whether the satellite phone was used during his time in India or if it received any unauthorized communication. “Such devices can be exploited for unmonitored communication, which is why their usage is tightly controlled,” a senior airport official explained.
The US Consulate in Chennai has been informed, and officials are expected to provide assistance to the detained student.
Under Indian law, carrying a satellite phone without prior clearance from the Department of Telecommunications is a punishable offence. Authorities have frequently urged international travelers to declare such devices upon arrival and obtain necessary permissions.
Further action in the case will depend on the outcome of the police investigation. Jackson remains in custody as inquiries continue.
