Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Reviews Mining Safety at DGMS Headquarters in Dhanbad

Dhanbad: In a significant move to bolster safety standards in India’s mining sector, Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, visited the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) headquarters in Dhanbad, Jharkhand on Friday. The visit was aimed at reviewing the functioning of DGMS and reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of miners across the country.

Dr. Mandaviya was accompanied by Deepika Kachhal, Joint Secretary, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Labour and Employment. A high-level review meeting was convened at the DGMS headquarters, where top officials, including Ujjwal Tah, Director General of DGMS, were present. The meeting featured a detailed presentation on the structure, objectives, and operational framework of DGMS, along with its initiatives in capacity building and workplace safety enforcement.

Addressing the officials, the Union Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening occupational safety and health services in the mining sector. He underlined the need for better coordination between central and state governments and called for the adoption of world-class mining technologies. “Acquainting ourselves with global best practices and technological advancements will not only enhance DGMS’s capabilities but also contribute to safer and more efficient mining operations,” Dr. Mandaviya noted.

A key highlight of the visit was a live mock demonstration of rescue operations organized by the DGMS. The exercise showcased the department’s preparedness in handling mining emergencies and left a strong impression on the Minister, who lauded the efforts of the personnel involved.

Following the review, Dr. Mandaviya also participated in a plantation drive at the DGMS campus, symbolizing the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility.
