Tripura Becomes a Pioneer in Digital Inclusivity with Bhashini MOU

Agartala: In a landmark move to promote regional languages and enhance citizen-centric governance, the Government of Tripura has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The initiative, under the guidance of Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, aims to increase the use of Tripura’s rich linguistic diversity in governance and facilitate digital participation for all citizens.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala during a state-level workshop titled “Bhashini Rajyam.” The event was inaugurated by Tripura’s IT Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and attended by key dignitaries, including IT Secretary Kiran Gitte, DIBD CEO Amitabh Nag, and Tripura IT Director Jeya Ragul Geshan B.

Bhashini, a flagship initiative of the Digital India program, aims to bridge both digital and literacy divides through cutting-edge technology. Offering real-time translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and voice-to-voice translation capabilities, Bhashini supports 22 Indian languages, enabling seamless communication and internet accessibility. Powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP), the platform delivers highly accurate translations, empowering citizens to access digital services in their native languages.

Tripura faces significant language barriers, particularly in rural and tribal areas where many citizens struggle to navigate software systems in Hindi or English. By integrating Bhashini into existing e-Governance platforms such as the CM Helpline, eVidhan, Kisan Sahayata App, and Amar Sarkar, the state aims to improve multilingual communication. Additionally, Bhashini will enhance local governance, enable voice-based data entry, and support education through multilingual technologies.

Key features include translating First Information Reports (FIRs) on the CCTNS platform and facilitating multilingual access to services, fostering greater inclusivity for Tripura’s diverse linguistic communities.

With this MoU, Tripura becomes the first northeastern state and the eighth state in India to partner with Bhashini. It is also the first state in eastern India to take this significant step toward digital inclusivity. By prioritizing focused workshops and integration strategies, Tripura joins a select group of states actively embracing Bhashini to promote regional languages and inclusive governance.

The integration of Bhashini into Tripura’s e-Governance systems represents a pivotal step in bridging the digital divide and preserving the state’s linguistic heritage. Supported by DIBD, this initiative empowers citizens by breaking down language barriers, fostering cost-effective translations, and ensuring equitable access to essential services.
