Odisha Bets on Mushroom Farming to Boost Farmer Incomes at Conclave 2026

Bhubaneswar: With a growing focus on sustainable agriculture and income diversification, the Agricultural Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (APICOL) organised the Mushroom Conclave 2026 in Bhubaneswar, bringing mushroom cultivation into the spotlight as a key driver of rural entrepreneurship.

Held at The Crown, the conclave brought together farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to deliberate on scaling up the mushroom sector through improved production practices, value addition, and stronger market linkages.

Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said Odisha has emerged as a major contributor to India’s mushroom output, accounting for around 11 per cent of total production. Highlighting its nutritional benefits and eco-friendly nature, he said mushroom farming offers a low-cost, high-return opportunity for farmers. He also noted that the government is extending financial support under the Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana (MKUY) and working towards better logistics and market access.

As part of the event, a new APICOL website was launched, and go-ahead letters were handed over to entrepreneurs to set up mushroom production and spawn units, signalling a push towards enterprise development in the sector.

Experts from Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology and industry specialists conducted technical sessions on modern cultivation techniques, post-harvest handling, and business opportunities in mushroom farming.

Commissioner-cum-Secretary Sachin Ramachandra Jadhav highlighted that mushroom cultivation requires less water and offers quicker returns, making it suitable for small and marginal farmers. Stakeholders from the Odisha Mushroom Growers Federation also stressed the sector’s potential in strengthening rural livelihoods.

Officials informed that more than 1,200 farmers have been approved for mushroom-based enterprises, while over 200 entrepreneurs have already received subsidies, reflecting growing momentum in the sector.
