India and Indonesia Renew Maritime Safety and Security Agreement

New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Indonesia Coast Guard (Badan Keamanan Laut Republik Indonesia – BAKAMLA) have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation for an additional three years. The agreement was formalized during the 2nd High-Level Meeting (HLM) held at Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi.

The meeting was presided over by Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, General Paramesh Sivamani, and BAKAMLA Chief, Vice Admiral Irvansyah, who was accompanied by an eight-member delegation on an official visit to India from January 24-28, 2025.

The discussions revolved around enhancing operational cooperation in critical areas such as Maritime Search and Rescue, Pollution Response, and Maritime Law Enforcement. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to sharing best practices and facilitating professional exchanges to bolster the safety and resilience of the Indo-Pacific region.

In a show of mutual collaboration, ICG Ship Shaunak is currently deployed to Jakarta from January 27-30, 2025, to strengthen operational linkages with BAKAMLA. The deployment underscores the active cooperation between the two maritime agencies and their shared vision for a secure maritime environment.

The renewal of the MoU highlights the growing strategic partnership between India and Indonesia, rooted in a shared interest in maintaining peace, safety, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The agreement serves as a testament to the enduring relationship between the two nations and their resolve to address common maritime challenges effectively.
