Bhubaneswar: Ushasi Rath, a proud native of Puri, Odisha, took center stage at the Ekamra Utsav 2024, organized by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA). Her stall in the Flea Market showcased not just artistic creations but a remarkable journey dedicated to preserving Odisha’s cultural heritage.
Having spent years abroad in Dubai, Ushasi Rath’s love for her roots and the cultural richness of Odisha remained unwavering. Upon returning home, she set out on a mission to breathe life back into the fading tradition of crafting Puri Kathi Kandhei, delicate toys intricately made from sugar palm tree leaves.
Ushasi’s commitment extended beyond art; it embraced women’s empowerment. She imparted training to local women, including widows and those from slum communities, in the intricate art of crafting these traditional toys. In doing so, Ushasi not only empowered these women but also played a crucial role in preserving a significant aspect of Odisha’s cultural heritage.
The BDA’s Ekamra Utsav 2024 provided a crucial platform for artisans like Ushasi to showcase their talents, contributing to the promotion of Odisha’s rich heritage and culture.
Ushasi Rath’s journey is a compelling narrative of tradition preservation, community upliftment, and women’s empowerment. Her story stands as a testament to the profound impact individuals can achieve when they combine passion with a steadfast commitment to their roots.
