Berhampur: In the heart of the Silk City, a new voice is making waves, bringing local stories and concerns to the forefront. Radio Silk City (88.4 FM), a community radio station launched in December 2024, is more than just a broadcast—it is a platform for empowerment, amplifying the voices of those often unheard.
Every morning at 6:30 AM, RJ Priyanka, a passionate young broadcaster, arrives at the station, ready to shape the day’s programming. Over the next six to seven hours, she and her dedicated team meticulously plan, record, and produce content that resonates with the community. With popular shows like ‘Kahani Mala’, her voice has become synonymous with Radio Silk City, engaging listeners across Berhampur and beyond.
An initiative of Youth for Social Development (YSD), a Berhampur-based civil society organization founded by Bibhu Prasad Sahu, the station is dedicated to women and youth—true catalysts for change. Through Radio Silk City, they share their experiences, voice their challenges, and inspire collective action.
“Our commitment goes beyond storytelling,” explains Sahu. “We address crucial social issues such as gender equality, violence, and climate change, while also promoting sustainable practices, water conservation, and responsible resource management. Additionally, we actively showcase Berhampur’s cultural and tourism heritage, bringing its rich traditions to a wider audience. Every program reflects our tagline: Information, Entertainment, and Empowerment.”
Radio Silk City’s reach extends across Berhampur town and the surrounding areas of Kukudahandi, Chhatrapur, and Rangeilunda blocks. The station broadcasts twice daily—from 7 AM to 10 AM and again from 6 PM to 9 PM— offering a vibrant mix of local news, music, interviews, and interactive shows.
“What sets us apart from other community radio stations is our diverse audience,” says Sahu. “We cater to both rural and urban listeners, ensuring our content is relevant and engaging for both groups.”
At a time when the relevance of traditional radio is being questioned, Radio Silk City stands as a testament to its enduring power. Through carefully curated content, it connects, empowers, and inspires, proving that radio is not just surviving—it is thriving.
