Port Blair: The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, arrived in Port Blair today to embark on a significant five-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The visit kicked off with a series of engagements aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the region’s strategic, cultural, and environmental significance.
In her initial engagement at Port Blair, President Murmu paid homage to the nation’s heroes by laying a wreath at the Martyr’s Column. Subsequently, she visited the Cellular Jail Complex and Museum, immersing herself in the historical and cultural fabric of the islands. The President also attended the captivating light and sound show at the Cellular Jail, offering insights into the region’s storied past.
A civic reception, hosted in honor of the President by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration at Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology, marked a key event in her itinerary. Addressing the gathering, President Murmu emphasized the strategic importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. She highlighted their unique geographical position, serving as a vital link between India and the countries of South and South-East Asia. The President underscored the islands’ role as a core component of India’s Act East Policy.
President Murmu acknowledged the islands’ natural beauty, which draws people from around the world. She outlined ongoing efforts to boost tourism, including the inauguration of a new terminal at Veer Savarkar Airport. Notably, the President expressed delight at the substantial growth in tourist numbers between 2014 and 2022, attributing it to advancements in digital and physical connectivity.
Turning her attention to economic prospects, President Murmu emphasized that the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands constitutes approximately 30 percent of India’s total EEZ. She lauded ongoing initiatives to promote the export of fish and marine products, recognizing the islands’ potential contribution to India’s blue economy.
While celebrating the economic potential, President Murmu also stressed the importance of environmental conservation. Balancing development and environmental protection, she noted, is crucial for the sustainable growth of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The President’s visit signals a commitment to harnessing the region’s potential while preserving its unique ecological heritage.
