President Murmu Releases Commemorative Postage Stamp Honoring Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab on His 125th Birth Anniversary

Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab, the ‘Utkal Keshari’, President Droupadi Murmu today released a special commemorative postage stamp to honor the legacy of the renowned freedom fighter, politician, writer, and social reformer. The event was held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi and was attended by several prominent leaders.

In her address, President Murmu lauded Dr. Mahtab’s contributions to the Indian freedom struggle and his immense role in the cultural and political development of Odisha. As the chief guest, she highlighted Dr. Mahtab’s multifaceted legacy, which encompassed his work as a freedom fighter, historian, writer, and statesman. The release of the postage stamp, she said, was a tribute to his exceptional life and enduring influence on both Odisha and the nation.

The ceremony was also attended by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahatab, the son of Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab, was also present at the event to commemorate the occasion.

Dr. Mahtab, born on November 21, 1899, in Agarpada, Odisha, was a prominent leader whose work was inspired by figures such as Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, and Mahatma Gandhi. He played a pivotal role in the Indian freedom movement, actively participating in key events like the Non-Cooperation Movement and Salt Satyagraha. Dr. Mahtab’s leadership was instrumental in the integration of Odisha into India, and he was arrested multiple times for his involvement in the struggle for independence.

Apart from his political contributions, Dr. Mahtab was a prolific writer in both Odia and English. He penned several works, including a historical account of Odisha, History of Odisha, and was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for his literary work Gaon Majlis.

The Government of India has also constituted a high-level committee to celebrate Dr. Mahtab’s 125th birth anniversary, with Union Home and Cooperative Affairs Minister Amit Shah heading the committee. This initiative aims to honor Dr. Mahtab’s legacy and continue to inspire future generations with his vision for Odisha and the nation.
