Paradip Port Achieves Maritime Milestone with Inauguration of ‘Ocean Grace’ and Medical Mobile Unit

Paradip:  Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of MoPSW & AYUSH, inaugurated the groundbreaking 60-tonne bollard pull tug, ‘Ocean Grace,’ and the Medical Mobile Unit (MMU) at Paradip Port. The event showcased India’s commitment to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and marked a significant stride in maritime infrastructure.

The ‘Ocean Grace,’ developed by Cochin Shipyard Limited under MoPSW, is the first Make in India ASTDS Tug. Costing Rs. 45 crores, the tug boasts cutting-edge technology, powered by NIGATA main engines and a Power Z-Peller ZP Propulsion engine. Sonowal emphasized the vessel’s pivotal role in ensuring seamless navigation and proficient assistance for large vessels, particularly VLCCs and ULCCs.

The tug aligns with the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), aiming to convert 50% of all tugs into green tugs by 2030. As part of the first phase, major ports like JNPA, DPA, PPA, and VoCPA plan to purchase two battery-electric powered green tugs by 2027.

Under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the Decarbonisation Cell is set to pioneer advanced technology vessels, including electric water taxis, hybrid electric Ro-Ro ferries, and LNG electric cargo carriers. The vision extends to deploying green hydrogen and ammonia-powered tugs at major ports, showcasing a dedicated commitment to sustainable maritime practices.

In Odisha, the Sagarmala Programme has been pivotal in infrastructural development along coastal areas. Currently, 53 projects worth approximately Rs. 54,500 Cr are being monitored, with 21 completed and 32 in various stages of implementation. The initiative includes transforming the Paradip fishing harbour into a world-class facility, improving ferry services, and upskilling candidates through the Skill Development Program.

Paradip Port significantly contributes to CSR activities, exemplified by the inauguration of the Medical Mobile Unit (MMU). Costing around Rs 48LPA to operate, the MMU reflects the port’s commitment to providing accessible healthcare to underprivileged communities. Staffed with skilled medical professionals, the MMU offers various services like maternal and pediatric care, disease management, and health awareness programs.

Paradip Port’s expansion is at the forefront with the Rs 3,004.63 crore Western Dock project. This crucial step aims to enhance the port’s capacity to over 300MTPA in the next two years. The project includes creating a new dock with state-of-the-art infrastructure, deepening the inner harbor to accommodate Cape vessels, and optimizing inner harbor facilities. The Western Dock project operates under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) basis in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

The Paradip Port stands as a shining example of progress and growth, symbolizing the Ministry’s commitment to efficiency, excellence, and sustainable development in the maritime sector.
