Padma Shri Awardee Binod Kumar Pasayat, Voice of Sambalpuri Literature, No More

Bhubaneswar: Odisha on Wednesday mourned the loss of Binod Kumar Pasayat, one of the most prominent voices of Sambalpuri literature and folk culture, who passed away at the age of 89 at his Sambalpur residence near Sen Park. He had been battling age-related ailments.

Born on December 3, 1935, in Kusmel village of Balangir district, Pasayat led an extraordinary life — a barber by profession, yet a literary pioneer by passion. His dedication to Sambalpuri drama, songs, and poetry made him a cultural icon across western Odisha.

Pasayat’s writings resonated deeply with ordinary people, marked by simplicity, authenticity, and rootedness in local traditions. His celebrated play “Mui Nai Mare” (I Will Never Die) remains a timeless reflection of Sambalpuri identity, while his folk songs continue to echo in festivals and community gatherings.

In recognition of his vast contributions, he received several top honours, including the Padma Shri in 2024, the Sarala Puraskar (2008), the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Puraskar (2010), and the Sarada Prasanna Samman by Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi (2019).

Pasayat’s passing leaves behind a void in Odisha’s cultural and literary sphere, but his legacy as a tireless advocate for Sambalpuri art and expression will endure for generations to come.
