Odisha’s Konark Festival 2024 and International Sand Art Festival Inaugurated

Konark: The 35th edition of the Konark Festival, one of Odisha’s premier cultural events, began today with a magnificent inauguration by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Pravati Parida. Held against the backdrop of the iconic Sun Temple, the festival celebrates India’s rich artistic heritage and marks the vibrant start of Odisha’s tourism season.

The opening evening spotlighted India’s classical dance traditions, starting with a mesmerizing Odissi performance by Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar. The recital began with an invocation to Lord Jagannath, transitioning into “Bhavranga” and “Shakti,” portraying divine energy and power. Choreographed by Gurus Lingaraj Pradhan and Pankaj Kumar Pradhan, the performance was accompanied by soulful music composed by Dr. Bijay Kumar Jena and Dr. Bijay Kumar Barik.

The evening continued with a Kathak performance, Nartan Manjari, by Malti Shyam and her troupe from New Delhi. The presentation beautifully depicted the divine bond between the Almighty and devotees, with intricate rhythms and graceful movements choreographed by Malti Shyam.

The event was graced by dignitaries, including MPs, MLAs, senior tourism officials, and district administrators, adding to its significance.

Running parallel to the Konark Festival, the International Sand Art Festival showcased awe-inspiring creations on Chandrabhaga Beach. This year, 129 artists, including participants from eight countries—UK, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Russia, Portugal, Spain, and Sri Lanka—joined national talents from Odisha and seven Indian states.

The sand art pieces reflected themes of Women Empowerment, Odia Identity (Odia Asmita), and World Heritage and Monuments. A total of 35 unique creations were displayed, transforming the beach into a vibrant hub of artistic expression.

Odisha Tourism has ensured the festival’s global reach with live broadcasts on its social media channels and DD Bharati, enabling audiences worldwide to experience the grandeur from December 1 to 5.
