Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Water Resources Department has stepped up its preparedness for potential cyclone-related situations, directing officials to ensure the safety and operational readiness of dams, reservoirs, barrages and river embankments across the state.
The preparedness review was conducted by Principal Secretary of the Department of Water Resources, Shubha Sarma, following a state-level cyclone and flood preparedness meeting chaired by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari at Rajiv Bhawan. Engineers-in-Chief, Chief Engineers and Basin Managers participated in the meeting.
Sarma directed officials to strengthen monitoring and ensure that all critical water infrastructure remains ready to respond to adverse weather conditions. Particular emphasis was placed on the safety of dams and reservoirs, the condition of river embankments and the operational readiness of barrages and other water-related structures.
Officials were instructed to closely monitor rainfall forecasts, reservoir levels and river flows, while adhering to established reservoir operation protocols. Regular inspections of vulnerable stretches and water infrastructure were also emphasised to identify potential risks and facilitate timely preventive action.
The meeting further stressed the need for strong field-level preparedness, adequate availability of resources and effective communication with district administrations and other concerned agencies. Coordination among the department’s field units and local authorities was identified as essential for a timely and coordinated response during a cyclone or any subsequent flooding.
The department reiterated its commitment to taking proactive measures to minimise cyclone- and flood-related risks, protect critical water infrastructure and ensure public safety across Odisha.
