Odisha to Introduce Melanistic Tiger Safari in Baripada, Mayurbhanj

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to unveil a unique melanistic (black) tiger safari in Baripada, located in the Mayurbhanj district, with preparations for the project already in full swing. The safari will showcase the state’s rare and elusive melanistic tigers, marking a significant step in wildlife conservation and tourism.

Susanta Nanda, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), announced on Wednesday that the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA) has granted approval for the project, while the state is now awaiting final permission from the Supreme Court to begin work.

Nanda revealed that construction on the melanistic tiger safari would begin shortly. The safari will initially house four melanistic tigers from Nandankanan Zoo, along with another tiger carrying the melanism gene. However, no wild melanistic tigers will be released into the safari. The initiative aims to increase the population of these rare tigers through careful breeding programs.

He further noted that preparations for the safari are progressing rapidly, with groundwork already underway. In addition to the safari, a treatment center for providing medical care to wild animals is also being developed as part of the project.

While the CZA has approved the plan, the state awaits the final nod from the Supreme Court. Once all clearances are received, the project is expected to commence soon, making Odisha a prominent destination for wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
