Odisha Set to See Relief in Potato Prices as UP Trucks Arrive

Bhubaneswar: Odisha residents burdened by soaring potato prices can expect relief as a massive consignment of 300 trucks loaded with potatoes from Uttar Pradesh is set to arrive in the state by tomorrow. The influx is anticipated to stabilize prices, currently ranging from ₹35 to ₹40 per kilogram in retail markets.

Food and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra announced the development, expressing optimism about the positive impact on market rates. “With the increased supply, we expect prices to drop significantly, providing much-needed relief to consumers,” he said.

In addition to boosting supply, the state government has issued strict warnings against black marketing practices. Minister Patra emphasized that stern action will be taken against individuals or groups attempting to exploit the market situation.

Patra also criticized the West Bengal government for halting potato transportation to Odisha, despite a reported surplus of 2 lakh metric tonnes in the neighboring state.

Odisha relies on West Bengal for about 90% of its potato supply, a dependency that contributed to the recent price surge when supplies were disrupted. Retail prices spiked from ₹30 to ₹40-50 per kilogram, adding to the strain on households.
