Odisha Prepares for 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Preparations are in full swing for the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), set to be held in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, from January 8 to 10, 2024.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra presided over a preparatory meeting today, attended by MLAs, Mayor Sulochana Das, and senior officials. The meeting aimed to finalize the arrangements and ensure a seamless event showcasing Odisha’s rich heritage and welcoming thousands of diaspora members from around the globe.

Minister Mohapatra emphasized the significance of the event, which honors the contributions of Overseas Indians to India’s growth and celebrates their achievements. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives to promote Odisha on the international stage, mentioning recent engagements where the state was showcased.

The three-day event is set to witness the presence of prominent dignitaries, including Home Minister Amit Shah at the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the second day, and President Droupadi Murmu for the closing ceremony. It is anticipated that over 5,700 expatriate Indians and delegates from 140 countries will participate.

The state government is ensuring a grand and organized event with active coordination between the Home and Tourism Departments. Preparations are being made in key tourist destinations such as Cuttack, Puri, Bhubaneswar, and Konark. Bhubaneswar has been extensively beautified, and a fleet of 50 new buses, including 5 double-decker buses, will be used to manage transportation efficiently.

Principal Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Usha Padhi, provided an overview of the ongoing arrangements in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, and Khordha districts. High-level officials, including MLAs, BMC Commissioner, and the Collectors of Khordha, Puri, and Cuttack, are actively overseeing preparations.

The Tourism Department is focusing on providing comfortable accommodations, including hotels and guesthouses, for the visiting guests. Additionally, Odisha Police has heightened security to ensure a smooth and secure experience for all participants.
