Odisha Hosts Symposium on Science-Based Rice Research in Collaboration with IRRI

Bhubaneswar: A symposium focusing on science-based advancements in rice research was held today at the Krushi Bhavan Auditorium in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment. The event, chaired by Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, featured a lecture by Dr. Yvonne Pinto, Director General of IRRI, Manila, Philippines, on cutting-edge developments in rice cultivation.

In his address, Deputy CM Singh Deo emphasized Odisha’s deep-rooted history with rice cultivation, highlighting how traditional varieties such as Kala Jeera rice from the Koraput region have brought global recognition to the state. He announced the government’s readiness to support the establishment of a research branch of IRRI in Odisha, noting that this partnership could strengthen the state’s prominence in rice cultivation.

“We are committed to fostering innovations in rice research and addressing challenges such as climate resilience, nutritional improvements, and the development of export-oriented markets,” Singh Deo said.

Dr. Pinto praised Odisha’s proactive efforts in advancing rice research and emphasized the importance of addressing climate change, creating value chains, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. She added, “IRRI is dedicated to eliminating hunger, poverty, and malnutrition through science-based agricultural transformation. Collaborating with Odisha, we aim to bring innovative solutions to the state’s unique rice cultivation challenges.”

Principal Secretary Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee highlighted the state’s strategy for integrating advanced research with traditional agricultural practices. “Through partnerships with IRRI, we aim to make Odisha a leader in rice cultivation while ensuring a sustainable agricultural environment,” he stated.

The event also included contributions from senior officials and experts, including Director of Agriculture Prem Chandra Choudhary, Director of Horticulture Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, and the Dean of OUAT, who discussed the role of research in boosting the state’s agricultural economy.

The symposium concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, fostering dialogue among policymakers, scientists, and agricultural professionals.
