Odisha Govt Issues Alert to District Collectors Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has issued a high alert to Collectors of six districts in anticipation of heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) instructed the districts falling under orange and yellow warning zones to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential emergencies.

In a letter addressed to the Collectors, the SRC emphasized the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains. Urban areas, especially low-lying zones, are at risk of waterlogging, and roads and drains could be submerged. Municipal authorities have been advised to ensure that drains and stormwater channels are clear of debris, and deploy adequate de-watering pumps as necessary.

“The administration must be prepared to handle any eventualities arising from the heavy rainfall,” the SRC’s letter stated, underscoring the importance of immediate reporting of heavy to very heavy rainfall incidents to the SRC office.

Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea, with strict enforcement of safety advisories. Collectors have been instructed to promptly report any damages caused by the inclement weather to the government.

The meteorological department has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the central and northern Bay of Bengal, with a cyclonic circulation extending to mid-tropospheric levels. This system is expected to intensify and move northwestwards towards the Odisha coast over the next two days, potentially bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state over the next five days.

The Odisha government’s preemptive measures aim to ensure the safety and well-being of residents during the anticipated adverse weather conditions. District authorities are urged to take all necessary steps to minimize risks and safeguard public infrastructure.
