Global Service Disruptions Caused by Microsoft and CrowdStrike Glitch

Bhubaneswar: In an unprecedented event, services across multiple sectors worldwide were disrupted today due to a technical issue at US tech giant Microsoft and American cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Millions of Microsoft Windows users experienced the infamous “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) error, causing their computers to shut down or restart unexpectedly.

Microsoft attributed the preliminary root cause to a “configuration change” in a portion of its Azure backend workloads. This change led to interruptions between storage and compute resources, resulting in connectivity failures that affected downstream Microsoft 365 services reliant on these connections. The company is actively working to resolve the issue and restore normal service.

Several Indian airlines reported significant disruptions due to the Microsoft outage.

  • Air India stated, “Our digital systems have been impacted temporarily due to the current Microsoft outage, resulting in delays.”
  • Indigo issued an advisory noting, “Our systems across the network are impacted by an ongoing issue with Microsoft Azure, which has resulted in increased wait times at our contact centres and airports. You may experience slower check-ins and longer queues.”
  • Akasa Air announced on X, “Due to infrastructure issues with our service provider, some of our online services, including booking, check-in, and manage booking services, will be temporarily unavailable.”
  • SpiceJet also posted on X, “We’re currently facing a technical issue in providing updates on flight disruptions. Our team is actively working to resolve this issue. We regret any inconvenience caused and will update you once the issue is resolved.”

Users globally were unable to access various Microsoft apps and services, including Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Azure. According to the outage tracking website Downdetector, users also reported issues with apps such as Instagram, Amazon, Gmail, and major Indian banks including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Bank of India, and HDFC Bank.

Reports suggest that the glitch may have been triggered by a recent update from CrowdStrike. The cybersecurity firm integrates with Windows to provide advanced security using cloud-based AI and machine learning to detect and prevent threats in real-time. A CrowdStrike update recently caused BSOD issues on Windows systems.

In a support note, CrowdStrike confirmed the problem, stating that they have received several reports of Windows systems experiencing blue screen crashes across various sensor versions. While the firm has not provided detailed information about the cause, they assured users that their engineering teams are actively working on a resolution. CrowdStrike advised users to exercise caution until a permanent fix is implemented, emphasizing that there is no need to open a support ticket.

As Microsoft and CrowdStrike work to resolve these issues, affected users and organizations are advised to stay informed through official channels for updates. The incident underscores the interconnected nature of modern digital infrastructure and the wide-reaching impact of technical disruptions in key services.
