Odisha Assembly Standing Committee Proposes Opera Censor Board to Regulate Performances

Bhubaneswar: To preserve the integrity of Odia drama culture, the Odisha Assembly Standing Committee has recommended the formation of an Opera Censor Board to prevent obscenity in opera shows. The proposed board aims to ensure that opera performances adhere to established guidelines and regulations while maintaining high standards in Odia stage performances.

The Opera Censor Board will be responsible for reviewing the content of operas, including storylines, direction, and acting, to ensure they comply with cultural norms and prevent any form of indecency. The committee emphasized that such a step would uphold the artistic value of Odia opera while maintaining respect for the audience’s sensibilities.

Alongside the board’s creation, the committee has proposed several initiatives to promote the rich heritage of Odia opera. These initiatives include the organization of an Odia Opera Festival, a week-long event showcasing Odia jatra performances, as well as the introduction of the Jatra Award to honor established artists for their contributions to Odia drama. The committee also suggested a multilingual music competition to promote Odia folk music and drama across linguistic boundaries.

In its push for cultural preservation, the committee recommended the restoration of old theatres to protect Odia cultural heritage and proposed the installation of statues to honor notable figures from Odisha’s opera history.

Additionally, the Culture Department has developed a comprehensive opera guideline, which is currently awaiting government approval. Once approved, these guidelines will serve as a framework to regulate content and uphold the quality of opera performances in the state.
