NHRC to Hold Two-Day Camp Sitting in Bhubaneswar to Hear Human Rights Violation Cases

Bhubaneswar: To ensure justice for victims of rights violations and strengthen awareness of human rights, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will conduct a two-day Camp Sitting in Bhubaneswar on July 21 and 22.

The Commission will hear a range of cases concerning alleged human rights violations at the State Guest House, Unit V, Keshari Nagar, starting at 10 am on July 21. NHRC Chairperson Justice V Ramasubramanian, along with Members Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, and Priyank Kanoongo, will preside over the hearings.

NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal, Registrar (Law) Joginder Singh, and other senior officials will also participate in the proceedings. The primary objective of the camp is to ensure speedy redressal of complaints, raise awareness among administrative officials, and emphasize the Commission’s commitment to upholding human rights at the grassroots level.

The Commission has called upon state authorities and complainants to remain present at the hearings for real-time deliberations and decisions. Cases to be taken up include attacks on journalists and human rights defenders (HRDs), crimes against women and children—including those under POCSO—death due to snakebites and lack of medical care, trafficking of girls during the COVID-19 pandemic, issues of witchcraft-related violence, and flooding affecting families in Bhadrak, Kendrapada, and other coastal regions.

In addition to case hearings, the NHRC will engage with representatives of civil society, NGOs, and human rights defenders to understand challenges on the ground and foster collaborative solutions.

Following the hearings, the Commission will hold a meeting with Odisha’s Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and senior officials to discuss systemic improvements in the protection and promotion of human rights across the state.
