Ministry of Defence Achieves Historic ₹1 Lakh Crore Milestone in GeM Transactions

In a groundbreaking achievement, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set a remarkable benchmark by surpassing the ₹1 Lakh Crore milestone in the total order value processed through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, denoted as Gross Merchandise Value (GMV). Notably, transactions worth approximately ₹45,800 Crore have been secured in the current financial year alone, covering a spectrum from general store items like eggs to crucial missile systems and vital defence acquisitions. GeM has efficiently facilitated the execution of over 5.47 lakh orders for the Ministry.

The MoD emerges as the pioneering central government entity to reach this significant figure, reflecting its unwavering dedication to optimizing public spending in the Defence sector. This milestone underscores the Ministry’s commitment to embrace transformative changes and aligns with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India, according to GeM CEO, Shri P. K. Singh.

In adherence to GeM’s core principle of promoting social inclusion, MoD buyers have awarded 50.7% of the total orders, totaling ₹60,593 Crore, to Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). This not only fortifies India’s economic independence but also highlights the significant role played by MSEs in defence procurement.

From its inception, MoD has been an enthusiastic participant in the GeM platform. The widespread trust demonstrated by nearly 19,800 MoD buyers, spanning remote areas like North-Eastern States, Leh-Ladakh, and various Island Territories, has contributed to this historic accomplishment.

Moreover, the engagement of Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) on the GeM platform has streamlined procurement processes, ushering in a paradigm shift in the defence procurement landscape.

GeM continues to bring about cost-effectiveness and efficiency in government transactions through initiatives like demand aggregation modules. By consolidating requirements for similar products across diverse organizations, GeM maximizes the advantages of large-volume procurement, reinforcing its commitment to transforming government procurement practices. The Ministry of Defence’s pioneering role in this accomplishment sets a precedent for efficient, transparent, and inclusive procurement in the country.
