Mahakumbh 2025: A Celebration of Spirituality, Culture, and Economic Growth

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh government, hosted a briefing today for foreign journalists at Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan to highlight the spiritual, cultural, and economic significance of the upcoming Mahakumbh 2025. Senior officials from both governments emphasized the event’s global importance, projecting it as the world’s largest religious gathering.

Scheduled to take place in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, 2025, the Mahakumbh is expected to draw over 45 crore attendees, including 15 lakh foreign tourists. Officials explained that the event’s origins are rooted in the mythological Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean, during which drops of nectar fell at four sacred sites: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The sacred bath, or Shahi Snan, during the Mahakumbh symbolizes soul purification and self-realization, attracting millions of devotees seeking spiritual enlightenment.

The Mahakumbh is poised to surpass other major global events, such as the Rio Carnival, Haj, and Oktoberfest, in terms of attendance. In 2019, the Kumbh Mela welcomed 25 crore visitors, and the 2025 edition is set to almost double that number, underscoring its unparalleled scale and global appeal.

Beyond its spiritual essence, Mahakumbh 2025 is projected to provide a significant economic boost to India, with an estimated contribution of ₹2 lakh crore. Uttar Pradesh’s GDP is expected to grow by more than 1% as a result of the event. Trade in daily essentials alone is projected at ₹17,310 crore, while the hotel and travel sectors are anticipated to generate ₹2,800 crore. Religious materials and flower sales are expected to add ₹2,000 crore and ₹800 crore, respectively.

To ensure the smooth conduct of the event, extensive infrastructure development has been undertaken in Prayagraj. Fourteen new flyovers, nine permanent ghats, and 12 kilometers of temporary ghats have been constructed, along with seven new bus stations. Security measures have been intensified, with the deployment of 37,000 police personnel, 14,000 home guards, and 2,750 AI-based CCTV cameras to ensure the safety of devotees. The health infrastructure includes 6,000 hospital beds, 43 hospitals, and air ambulances for emergency response. Additionally, 10,200 sanitation workers and 1,800 Ganga Sevadut volunteers have been assigned to maintain cleanliness during the event.

The Mahakumbh will also see the participation of 13 Akharas, including the Kinnar Akhara, Dashnam Sanyasini Akhara, and other women’s Akharas, symbolizing gender equality and progressive values. Uttar Pradesh officials highlighted that this gathering will celebrate unity, bringing together people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

Mahakumbh 2025 is more than just a religious congregation. It offers a platform to showcase India’s rich cultural heritage and economic vitality to a global audience. Officials at the briefing emphasized that the event’s meticulous planning and inclusive approach reflect India’s ability to integrate tradition with modernity, making it a symbol of faith, prosperity, and unity on an unparalleled scale.
