International Conference on Quantum Mechanics Marks 100 Years of Satyendra Nath Bose’s Revolutionary Work

Kolkata:  The 5-day International Conference on Photonics, Quantum Information, and Quantum Communication, organized by the S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS) in Kolkata, commenced with an inauguration highlighting the profound impact of Satyendra Nath Bose’s groundbreaking work on quantum mechanics, marking its centenary celebration.

Distinguished scientists and scientific administrators gathered on this occasion to trace the evolution of quantum mechanics, emphasizing its growing significance in technological interventions. Professor Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, spoke about the ongoing second revolution in Quantum Mechanics, noting the diminishing gap between fundamental science and technological applications.

“This is a wonderful time for all of us to be a part of this new mission. The right problems that are solvable and have wide applications will have to be addressed by researchers. Quantum sensing, satellite-based quantum communications, and post-quantum cryptography are some of the areas that need to be focused on,” he expressed. Professor Sood highlighted the increasing global interest, with 23 countries establishing National Quantum Missions, where India can play a substantial role, particularly in the field of quantum algorithms.

Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Prof. Abhay Karandikar emphasized the significance of the National Quantum Mission (NQM), which is gaining momentum. He mentioned the establishment of four mission hubs across the country to bring together technical experts in a consortium mode, fostering international collaboration. Prof. Karandikar encouraged students, experts, and startups to contribute to the NQM, emphasizing the role of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation in creating a conducive research atmosphere.

The conference, inaugurated as the first program of the year-long celebration of Satyendra Nath Bose’s historic work, will include three International Conferences and several Outreach Programs organized by SNBNCBS throughout the year.

Prof. Tanusri Saha-Dasgupta, Director of S.N. Bose National Centre, highlighted the global participation of scientists, students, and media to exchange views, share research findings, and draw inspiration from each other during the celebration.

Satyendra Nath Bose’s pioneering work on quantum statistics, published in 1924, laid the foundation for modern quantum technologies. His collaboration with Einstein led to the development of Bose-Einstein statistics and the Bose-Einstein condensate. The conference pays homage to Bose’s colossal work, providing a platform for experts across the globe to discuss quantum mechanics, quantum information, and quantum communication. The year-long celebration will further popularize science through conferences and outreach programs, commemorating Bose’s enduring legacy.
