Debrigarh Adds Homestays, Tented Stays to Boost Community-Based Ecotourism

Debrigarh: Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary is set to offer visitors a wider range of nature-based experiences with the addition of new accommodation and visitor facilities developed under the Integrated Hirakud Development Plan (IHDP). The expansion aims to strengthen the sanctuary’s position as an ecotourism destination while creating livelihood opportunities for forest-dependent communities living in the surrounding villages.

The new infrastructure was inaugurated through video conferencing by Odisha Forest Minister on October 3, 2026.

Among the key additions are 10 homestays at Dhodrokusum village, located at the foothills of Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary. Managed by tribal women, the homestays will allow visitors to experience the sanctuary’s natural surroundings as well as local village life and culture. The initiative is also expected to create sustainable livelihood and entrepreneurship opportunities for local women.

The sanctuary has also added 20 tented accommodations under Debrigarh Camping. Designed to offer panoramic views of the Debrigarh hills, the tents feature verandahs from where visitors can enjoy sunsets. Two new log houses with dormitory facilities have also been developed to accommodate larger families and groups.

Other facilities include a souvenir shop, Ecotourism Cell, Wildlife Theatre and tea shop. These additions are intended to make visits more organised and visitor-friendly, while providing opportunities to learn about the sanctuary’s forests, wildlife and conservation efforts.

Beyond improving visitor facilities, the expansion is expected to widen local participation in tourism-related activities. Community members are being engaged in homestay management, hospitality, eco-guiding, safari operations, food preparation and service, and souvenir sales. The aim is to ensure that the economic benefits of ecotourism reach communities living around the sanctuary.

The initiative is also expected to reduce dependence on forest resources by providing alternative livelihood options. By linking local incomes with the health and protection of the landscape, the community-managed model seeks to strengthen residents’ participation in conservation and support the long-term protection of Debrigarh’s forests and wildlife.
