Bhubaneswar: In a competitive showdown at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium on Wednesday, the Indian women’s hockey team encountered a 0-3 setback against Australia in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24. Australia’s captain, Grace Stewart (19’), Tatum Stewart (23’), and Kaitlin Nobbs (55’), secured the victory for their team with well-executed goals.
India commenced the match with an aggressive approach, earning a penalty corner in the second minute. However, Australia’s goalkeeper Zoe Newman displayed agility, thwarting any imminent danger. Both teams had their share of goal-scoring opportunities in the following minutes, but the final touch eluded them. Despite Australia’s mounting pressure, the Indian defense held strong, concluding the first quarter without conceding.
In the second quarter, as India sought a goal, Australia executed a swift counter. Kaitlin Nobbs initiated the move, finding Grace Stewart in the shooting circle, who skillfully tapped the ball in to open the scoring.
India endeavored to create chances, but the Australian defense remained resolute. A quick counter by Australia led to a penalty corner, and Tatum Stewart’s drag flick doubled the lead midway through the second quarter.
As the first half neared its end, India earned two penalty corners but failed to convert, leaving the scoreline at 2-0.
The third quarter witnessed Australia adopting a defensive stance, absorbing India’s offensive attempts. Despite a penalty corner opportunity for India in the last minute of the quarter, Udita’s shot went wide, maintaining Australia’s two-goal lead.
In the final quarter, India intensified their press, earning a penalty corner early on. However, a missed attempt by Udita dashed India’s hopes. Another penalty corner for India proved frantic but unsuccessful.
Australia further extended their lead as Kaitlin Nobbs cleverly maneuvered the ball through Savita’s legs, securing a 3-0 advantage with five minutes remaining. As the match concluded, India made a late attempt with Navneet’s shot, but the Australian goalkeeper remained vigilant.
Next up for India is a clash against the United States in Bhubaneswar on February 9, where they aim to bounce back from the defeat and regain momentum in the FIH Hockey Pro League.
