Bhubaneswar: In a major step to enhance passenger convenience and address the rising demand, Indian Railways has announced the augmentation of the Puri–Rourkela Vande Bharat Express with an additional eight coaches. Starting August 7, 2025, the train will operate with 16 coaches instead of the existing 8, increasing capacity by 50%.
The upgraded composition of Train No. 20836/20835 (Puri–Rourkela–Puri) will include 12 AC Chair Cars, 2 Executive Chair Cars, and 2 Crew Coaches, allowing more passengers to experience the comfort and speed of Odisha’s prestigious semi-high-speed rail service.
This enhancement comes in response to the train’s overwhelming popularity. The Puri–Rourkela Vande Bharat Express currently runs at over 110% capacity, with occupancy rates of 112.76% from Puri to Rourkela and 127.64% on the return route, reflecting high patronage from commuters, business travelers, and tourists alike.
The additional coaches aim to reduce waitlists, improve seating availability, and provide a more convenient travel experience. Officials expect the move to boost regional connectivity, promote tourism, and contribute to the economic development of Odisha.
Operating six days a week (except Tuesdays), the Vande Bharat Express covers a distance of 505 km between Puri and Rourkela in approximately 7.5 hours, with halts at Khurda Road Junction, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Talcher Road, Angul, Rairakhol, Sambalpur City, and Jharsuguda Junction. Departures are scheduled at 5:00 AM from Puri and 2:10 PM from Rourkela.
Indian Railways reiterated its commitment to delivering world-class services to passengers. The expansion of coach capacity in the Puri–Rourkela Vande Bharat Express reflects this dedication to modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly transportation.
