India Witnesses Significant Decline in Maternal Mortality Rates: UN Report

New Delhi: India has made remarkable progress in maternal healthcare, witnessing a substantial decline in Maternal Mortality Rates (MMR) over the past two decades. According to the Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (MMEIG) under the United Nations, India’s MMR has reduced from 384 in 2000 to 103 in 2020.

The UN MMEIG 2020 report, titled “Trends in Maternal Mortality 2000 to 2020,” reveals that India’s MMR decline of 6.36% surpasses the global average of 2.07% during the same period. Globally, MMR has decreased from 339 in 2000 to 223 in 2020.

The data, maintained by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, indicates significant progress in India’s maternal healthcare landscape. The Sample Registration System (SRS) report by the Registrar General of India (RGI) reveals the detailed Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) for the last five years and the Stillbirth Rate from 2016 to 2020.
