India Unveils Ambitious AI Strategy with OpenAI Collaboration

New Delhi: As global competition in artificial intelligence (AI) intensifies, India is positioning itself at the forefront of the AI revolution. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that the country has devised a comprehensive strategy to create a full AI stack, and OpenAI has expressed interest in collaborating with India on this ambitious mission.

After meeting OpenAI Co-founder and CEO Sam Altman in the national capital, Minister Vaishnaw took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the highlights of the conversation. He noted that Altman praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for AI and the broader goal of democratizing technology.

“Had super cool discussion with @sama on our strategy of creating the entire AI stack – GPUs, model, and apps. Willing to collaborate with India on all three,” Minister Vaishnaw posted, underscoring the significance of the collaboration.

Altman, the creator of the widely popular ChatGPT models, highlighted India’s pivotal role in the AI landscape, calling it the second-largest market for OpenAI globally. He emphasized that India has the potential to lead the AI race, stating, “AI models are still not cheap, but they are doable. India should be a leader there, of course.” He also expressed admiration for India’s rapid adoption of AI and its ability to build an entire ecosystem around it.

In a major boost to AI research and development, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Union Budget presentation, announced the creation of three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to AI in education, with a budget allocation of ₹500 crore. These Centres will focus on advanced AI research, the development of AI learning tools, and fostering collaborations between educational institutions and industries. “AI is transforming industries worldwide, and India needs to lead in both AI research and its practical applications,” FM Sitharaman remarked.

Additionally, India is set to launch its own secure and affordable indigenous AI model within the next six months. This initiative is part of the IndiaAI mission, which aims to develop AI solutions tailored to India’s specific needs, including supporting Indian languages. The mission is backed by a state-of-the-art common computing facility that will further empower India to customize AI technologies for the domestic context.

With OpenAI’s support and the government’s strong commitment to AI research and development, India is positioning itself as a global leader in the AI field, ready to harness the transformative potential of this technology for economic and societal progress.
