India Strengthens Global Digital Leadership with ITU Collaboration in Geneva

Geneva: Secretary (Telecom), Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, Dr. Neeraj Mittal, embarked on an official visit to Geneva to bolster India’s position in global digital leadership and deepen engagements with key international stakeholders in the telecommunication sector.

During the visit, the DoT and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) signed a Letter of Intent (LoI), ushering in a new phase of strategic collaboration. This agreement sets the stage for discussions on initiatives focusing on digital twin technologies, AI-driven solutions, virtual world technologies, and IMT-2030 advancements. The collaboration also aims to promote global standards, advance sustainable development, and foster citizen engagement in urban and infrastructure planning.

Dr. Mittal held discussions with ITU leadership, including Secretary-General Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, reaffirming India’s commitment to digital connectivity, inclusion, and innovation. The discussions highlighted India’s leadership in 5G/6G technologies, AI for Digital Transformation, cybersecurity frameworks, and ITU’s Partner2Connect initiative aimed at bridging the global digital divide. India also reiterated its pledge to contribute to ITU’s initiatives, supporting global connectivity projects and skill development programs.

In a move to position India as a hub for global policy discourse on telecommunications, Dr. Mittal proposed hosting the ITU-Plenipotentiary Conference 2030 in India, a proposal that received positive acknowledgment. Further discussions are expected at the upcoming ITU Council Meeting, building on India’s successful hosting of WTSA-2024 in New Delhi in October 2024.

AI-Driven Digital Twin Technologies: Telecom Beyond Connectivity

Next-generation mobile communication technologies are evolving beyond traditional connectivity, transforming infrastructure planning through AI, Digital Twins, and real-time connectivity. By integrating these technologies into a unified ecosystem, they enable intelligent, interconnected systems that revolutionize transport, urban development, and healthcare planning. This shift ensures dynamic, adaptive, and sustainable infrastructure development.

The LoI marks a transformative phase in the telecom sector, shifting its role from mere connectivity provider to a platform delivering reliable, data-driven insights for infrastructure planning. This collaboration fosters innovative business models and scalable, knowledge-based solutions across industries, driving sustainable growth and reshaping the future of infrastructure.

Key Highlights of the Collaboration:

  • Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building: Facilitating insights exchange from DoT’s Sangam and ITU’s Citiverse to enhance cross-sectoral data integration.
  • Global Standards Development: Contributing to ITU-T Study Group 20 on IoT, digital twins, and smart cities to ensure seamless scalability of AI-driven solutions.
  • Sandbox Environments and Demonstrations: Establishing test environments to validate digital twin technologies and regulatory frameworks.
  • Citizen Engagement and Simulations: Leveraging AI-powered platforms for real-time urban planning, enhancing participatory governance.
  • Mobile Phone Data and Privacy: Sharing insights on privacy-enhancing techniques for ICT measurement and digital twin development.
  • AI Model Integration for Digital Twins: Customizing AI models with country-specific datasets to enhance infrastructure development and urban mobility.
