India Launches 16 Initiatives to Empower Persons with Disabilities on International Day

New Delhi: The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 with the launch of 16 transformative initiatives aimed at empowering Divyangjans across India. Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar unveiled the initiatives at a grand event in New Delhi, which featured cultural performances by Divyangjan artists and was attended by dignitaries, officials, and stakeholders from the disability sector.

In his address, Dr. Virendra Kumar emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering inclusivity. “These initiatives reflect our unwavering dedication to creating an inclusive society where Divyangjans have equal opportunities and accessibility. We remain steadfast in our mission to uphold their rights and dignity,” he said.

Secretary (DEPwD) Rajesh Aggarwal reiterated the government’s resolve, stating, “Each of these steps, from advancing accessibility to fostering employability, embodies our vision of an equitable India. Our focus remains on dismantling barriers and unlocking opportunities for every Divyangjan.”

Key Highlights of the Initiatives

The newly launched initiatives span accessibility, education, employment, and technological innovation:

  1. Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan: An online platform to empanel accessibility auditors, enhancing inclusive infrastructure development.
  2. Sugamya Bharat Yatra: Divyangjans will assess public spaces using the AI-powered “Yes to Access” app.
  3. Accessible Storybooks: A collaboration with NIEPVD and NBT launched 21 Braille, audio, and large-print books to promote inclusive education.
  4. Kadam Knee Joint: An advanced mobility aid developed by IIT Madras and SBMT, offering enhanced durability for users.
  5. Infosys Springboard Skill Programme: Courses designed to empower 10,000 deaf learners with marketable skills over the next year.
  6. Braille Books Portal: A new digital platform for the seamless creation of Braille books.
  7. Google Extension for Hearing Impairment: A tool providing sign language communication in media and education for India’s Deaf community.
  8. E-Sanidhya Portal: An online platform by Tata Power and NIEPID to support individuals with neuro-diversity, particularly autism.

A Vision for Inclusivity

The initiatives aim to bridge gaps in accessibility and employability, empowering Divyangjans to lead dignified, self-reliant lives. The cultural sensitivity of projects such as the indigenous Indian Intelligence Test by NIEPID underscores the focus on tailored solutions for India’s diverse population.

Dr. Kumar highlighted that these efforts are part of a broader vision to create an inclusive India. By leveraging technology, partnerships, and innovative approaches, the government seeks to ensure that every individual, regardless of ability, contributes to and benefits from the nation’s growth.

The day’s celebrations reinforced the theme of resilience and talent among Divyangjans, setting the stage for a more inclusive future.
