India Gears Up to Lead Global Green Hydrogen Revolution, Says Minister Pralhad Joshi

New Delhi: Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, today reaffirmed India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in green hydrogen production and utilization. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for India’s first hydrogen-powered truck trials, the Minister highlighted the transformative vision of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) and India’s efforts toward achieving energy independence.

Pralhad Joshi emphasized that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has positioned itself at the forefront of the global green energy transition. With a ₹19,744 crore allocation, the National Green Hydrogen Mission is focused on establishing India as a key player in hydrogen production, storage, and application across multiple industries. India has already made significant progress, with 4,12,000 TPA of Green Hydrogen production awarded and 3 GW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity approved annually. Furthermore, seven pilot projects have been initiated in transportation, shipping, steel, and storage, supported by 88 published safety and scalability standards.

Outlining India’s 2030 targets, the Minister stated that the country aims to produce 5 million metric tons (MMT) of Green Hydrogen annually, install 60-100 GW of electrolyser capacity, and add 125 GW of renewable energy dedicated to hydrogen production. These initiatives are expected to reduce 50 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year, save ₹1 lakh crore in imports, and attract investments worth ₹8 lakh crore.

The Minister described the launch of hydrogen-powered truck trials as a landmark moment for India’s mobility sector, marking a shift away from fossil fuel dependency and toward energy security. India, being the third-largest oil consumer and fourth-largest crude oil importer, will benefit greatly from hydrogen technology in reducing its import reliance. The first batch of three hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks will operate on the Faridabad–Delhi NCR and Ahmedabad–Surat–Vadodara routes, while Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is setting up hydrogen refueling stations in Faridabad, Vadodara, Pune, and Balasore to support this initiative.

The Minister also praised the contributions of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, acknowledging his pivotal role in promoting hydrogen-powered mobility and fostering innovation in clean transportation.

Calling for collaborative efforts, Pralhad Joshi urged industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to support the green energy revolution and emphasized that hydrogen will play a crucial role in shaping India’s energy future. With India making rapid strides in green hydrogen technology, the nation is set to lead the way in sustainable and carbon-free energy solutions.
