India Launches First Hydrogen-Powered Truck Trials, Paving Way for Green Transport

New Delhi: In a significant step toward India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, jointly flagged off the country’s first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials in New Delhi today. The initiative, spearheaded by Tata Motors, marks a major milestone in the transition toward clean, green, and sustainable transportation.

Nitin Gadkari, speaking at the event, called hydrogen the fuel of the future, highlighting its potential to revolutionize India’s transport sector by reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy self-reliance. He emphasized that such groundbreaking initiatives will accelerate the shift to sustainable mobility in heavy-duty trucking and bring India closer to an efficient, low-carbon future.

Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, hailed the trials as a major breakthrough in India’s clean energy transition. He noted that green hydrogen would play a critical role in decarbonizing India’s transportation sector and reducing fossil fuel dependency. He emphasized that this initiative, launched under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, reflects India’s commitment to innovation, energy independence, and global climate goals.

The trial, funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, will span 24 months and involve the deployment of 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks across India’s major freight corridors, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar. These vehicles will feature two cutting-edge technologies—Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cells (H2-FCEV)—to assess the real-world commercial viability of hydrogen-powered long-haul transportation and the required infrastructure for seamless operations.

Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to leading India’s green mobility transformation. He stated that Tata Motors has always been at the forefront of innovation in mobility solutions and is honored to pioneer hydrogen truck trials. He credited the Government of India’s visionary leadership for making this project possible and pledged Tata Motors’ continued efforts in developing sustainable, zero-emission transport solutions.

The launch of these hydrogen-powered truck trials signals a major shift in India’s freight transport industry, aligning with the country’s broader green energy and sustainability goals. If successful, the trials could pave the way for large-scale adoption of hydrogen-based mobility solutions, reducing India’s carbon footprint and making the nation a global leader in clean transportation technology.
