Odisha Reviews Fuel Supply Amid Global Uncertainty, Assures No Shortage

Bhubaneswar: Amid concerns over global geo-political developments and their potential impact on energy supplies, the Odisha government on Friday conducted a high-level review to assess fuel availability and distribution across the state.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg at Lok Seva Bhawan, also included a session of the State Crisis Management Group to ensure preparedness for any disruptions.

Officials reviewed the status of essential fuels—petrol, diesel, and LPG—and assured that supply across Odisha remains stable. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary of the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department, informed that despite external challenges, there is no disruption in fuel availability.

The meeting also assessed preparedness for the upcoming Kharif season, with Sachin Ramachandra Yadav, Secretary of the Agriculture Department, confirming adequate availability and monitoring of urea fertiliser.

Detailed discussions were held on strengthening supply chain systems, including LPG distribution and fuel logistics. Authorities highlighted the implementation of the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system to ensure transparency and prevent irregularities in LPG delivery.

Priority has been given to essential sectors such as hospitals, schools, hostels, anganwadi centres, and food service institutions, while additional allocations have been made for commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants. Industrial sectors including steel and automobiles are also receiving enhanced LPG supply.

Officials noted that Oil Marketing Companies are operating at full capacity in line with Government of India directives, maintaining sufficient stock levels to meet demand. Continuous coordination is being maintained with industry stakeholders to avoid shortages.

As part of a long-term strategy, the state is promoting cleaner fuel alternatives such as Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Efforts are underway to expand the City Gas Distribution network, with increasing adoption of PNG in households and commercial establishments.

Special provisions have also been introduced for migrant workers and students, enabling them to access 5 kg LPG cylinders with basic identity proof. Meanwhile, enforcement has been intensified against illegal trade, with raids, seizures, and legal action being carried out under the Essential Commodities Act.

Round-the-clock control rooms have been activated at state and district levels, and daily monitoring is being undertaken. Police authorities are also ensuring safe transportation of fuel supplies.

Chairing the meeting, Garg directed officials to prioritise high-demand areas, accelerate PNG expansion, and maintain strict vigilance over fuel stocks. She also appealed to citizens to avoid panic buying and cooperate with authorities.
