New Delhi: India and Argentina have taken a significant step toward deepening their collaboration in the mining sector, particularly in lithium exploration and resource development, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a Public Sector Undertaking under India’s Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina.
The MoU was formalized during a high-level meeting in New Delhi, where Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, along with the Secretary, Ministry of Mines, and senior officials, met with H.E. Raúl Alejandro Jalil, Governor of Catamarca, Argentina. Discussions focused on investment opportunities, exploration efforts, and long-term supply agreements to bolster India’s access to critical minerals, particularly lithium.
Argentina, part of the ‘Lithium Triangle’, holds one of the world’s largest lithium reserves, making it a strategic partner for India in securing essential minerals for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage. The discussions highlighted ongoing lithium exploration efforts by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) & Greenko in Catamarca and explored new avenues for increased Indian participation in Argentina’s mining sector.
Both sides deliberated on investment models, joint ventures, and regulatory frameworks that could facilitate India’s engagement in Argentina’s resource-rich landscape. Emphasis was placed on sustainable mining practices, technology exchange, and infrastructure support, ensuring a mutually beneficial partnership.
With the signing of the MoU, India and Argentina have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the critical minerals sector. This agreement is expected to accelerate lithium exploration projects, enhance resource security for India, and open new opportunities for Indian companies to invest in Argentina’s mining industry.
