GRIDCO Signs MoU with Avaada Green H2 for Green Power Banking in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step toward establishing Odisha as a hub for Green Hydrogen and Ammonia production, GRIDCO has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s Avaada Green H2 Pvt Ltd. for providing a Green Power Banking Facility of 300 MW. The agreement, signed under the OERC Green Energy Open Access Regulations, 2023, will support Avaada’s upcoming 0.5 MTPA Green Ammonia Plant at Gopalpur, Ganjam, for a period of 25 years, starting from December 31, 2028.

Odisha has emerged as a leading state in India for Green Hydrogen and Ammonia production, offering a conducive policy environment, necessary infrastructure for Green Power, well-developed sea ports, and strong domestic demand from industries such as fertilizers, steel, metal processing, and oil refineries.

Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo highlighted that Odisha has already approved 14 Green Hydrogen and Ammonia projects with a proposed investment of ₹2 lakh crore and an employment potential of 22,000 jobs. He emphasized that renewable power, along with water, is a key component in Green Hydrogen and Ammonia production, and Odisha has created a supportive ecosystem for renewable energy projects.

Recognizing the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation, Odisha has introduced Green Power Banking to provide round-the-clock access to Green Energy for Hydrogen and Ammonia developers. With this initiative, Odisha becomes one of the few states in India to implement such a progressive energy management system, ensuring sustainable and uninterrupted power supply for the growing Green Hydrogen sector.
