IIT Ropar Unveils BLE Gateway System for Real-Time Monitoring Across Sectors

Ropar: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, through its iHub-AWaDH (Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub), has launched a cutting-edge Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Gateway and Node System. This groundbreaking innovation, developed under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) with ₹110 crore in funding from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), is set to transform data monitoring and transmission in agriculture, logistics, and environmental sectors.

The BLE Gateway System connects Bluetooth-enabled sensors to cloud platforms, enabling real-time data transfer and advanced analytics. Designed to support scalable Internet of Things (IoT) deployments, it boasts robust connectivity through 4G, WiFi, and LAN, as well as long-range data transmission capabilities of up to one kilometer in optimal conditions. Its compact and weatherproof design ensures durability in extreme environments while offering energy-efficient performance.

This innovative system addresses the need for seamless integration across various platforms. It enables data aggregation from multiple nodes, facilitating efficient analysis and decision-making. Furthermore, features such as remote firmware updates and compatibility with a range of sensors and mobile apps enhance user convenience and ensure the system remains up-to-date with minimal manual intervention.

The BLE Gateway’s impact spans multiple domains. In agriculture, it supports precision farming by monitoring soil moisture, air quality, and other vital parameters, helping farmers optimize resource use and adopt sustainable practices. In logistics, it ensures optimal storage and transit conditions for perishable goods, reducing risks of spoilage. For urban and industrial applications, the system enables large-scale environmental monitoring, improving operational efficiency and security.

Its integration with mobile apps and cloud platforms allows real-time access to data, enabling proactive responses to changes such as temperature spikes or unauthorized movements. This capability reduces potential losses and enhances resource management. The BLE Gateway also ensures secure data transmission through advanced encryption, safeguarding sensitive environmental information.

This technology reflects IIT Ropar’s commitment to driving sustainable advancements through innovation. By addressing critical challenges in monitoring and connectivity, the BLE Gateway strengthens India’s position as a leader in IoT and renewable technology, fostering growth in high-tech manufacturing and supporting the nation’s broader goals of energy efficiency and sustainability.
