In a significant development, the ICC Board announced the immediate lifting of the suspension imposed on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Sunday.
The suspension, initiated in November, was a response to SLC’s serious breach of its obligations as an ICC member. Specifically, it pertained to the requirement for SLC to autonomously manage its affairs, ensuring no government interference in the governance, regulation, and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
The ICC Board has been closely monitoring the situation since the suspension and is now content that SLC has rectified its breach of membership obligations.
Sports Minister Harin Fernando took to Twitter to announce the uplifting of the suspension, noting that an official statement would follow shortly.
Sri Lanka’s suspension in November 2023 was prompted by political interference concerns. The then Sports Minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, dismissed the existing Shammi Silva administration, leading to the appointment of an interim committee headed by former captain Arjuna Ranatunga. The ICC’s decision to lift the suspension indicates the resolution of the issues that led to the initial sanctions against SLC.
