Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu Assume Charge as Election Commissioners in India

New Delhi: Retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu have officially assumed their roles as Election Commissioners in the Election Commission of India (ECI) today. The duo, seasoned bureaucrats from the 1988 batch of the Indian Administrative Service, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to their new positions.

Their induction into the Election Commission was marked by a warm welcome from Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar at Nirvachan Sadan, the headquarters of the ECI. Addressing the gathering, Kumar underscored the pivotal moment of their appointment, coinciding with the intense preparations underway for the General Elections 2024, slated to be held in the world’s largest democracy.

The appointment of Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu was formalized through a notification published in the Gazette on March 14, 2024. Hailing from the Kerala and Uttarakhand cadres respectively, their diverse backgrounds and extensive administrative experience are expected to contribute significantly to the electoral processes of the nation.

With just twelve weeks remaining until the commencement of the General Elections, the Election Commission gears up for what promises to be a challenging yet crucial exercise in democracy.
