Dialogue on Climate and Disaster Resilience Marks 20th Odisha Manaska

Bhubaneswar: The 20th edition of Odisha Manaska, an initiative by All Things Odisha, was held on Sunday with a discussion on disaster preparedness, climate change and climate action in Odisha.

The session, titled “Odisha at the Climate Crossroads: Perspectives & Perceptions,” brought together people from different backgrounds to exchange ideas and learn from each other’s experiences.

The discussion featured two speakers—Meghanad Behera, State Project Manager at the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), and independent climate journalist Rakhi Ghosh.

Speaking at the session, Behera highlighted Odisha’s journey in disaster management since the 1999 Super Cyclone. He explained how the state has strengthened its preparedness and response systems over the years, helping it manage cyclones and other disasters more effectively. He also spoke about Odisha’s efforts to prepare for droughts, heatwaves, snakebite incidents, human-animal conflict, industrial accidents, chemical hazards and radiation emergencies.

Rakhi Ghosh shared stories from her reporting across Odisha, reflecting on the experiences of people affected by disasters and the challenges they continue to face during recovery. She stressed the importance of listening to local communities while reporting on climate change and disasters.

The interactive session saw participants sharing their views and raising questions on disaster preparedness. Behera addressed several common misconceptions and explained the state’s community-based and inclusive approach to building disaster resilience. Participants appreciated Odisha’s focus on preparedness at the household and community levels.

The session was moderated by Sandip Bal and Sonali Priyadarsini. Among those present were heritage researcher Anil Dhir, activist Sarita Barpanda, professionals from the development sector and college students.

All Things Odisha, a Bhubaneswar-based think tank, organises the Odisha Manaska dialogue series at the headquarters of ExtraOdinari and Safe Odisha For Her (SOFH) in Saheed Nagar.

Launched in August 2024, Odisha Manaska is a monthly discussion forum that encourages conversations on issues related to identity, society and public policy, providing a platform for people to share their ideas, experiences and perspectives.
