Power Restored to 93% of Flood-Affected Consumers in Odisha, DISCOMs Told to Expedite Remaining Work

Bhubaneswar: Power supply has been restored to nearly 93 per cent of consumers affected by the recent floods in Odisha, with the state government directing power distribution companies (DISCOMs) to complete restoration work at the earliest while ensuring strict safety measures in inundated areas.

The progress was reviewed at a high-level meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Vishal Kumar Dev following the directions of Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo. The meeting assessed restoration efforts in flood-affected districts and reviewed the status of damaged electricity infrastructure.

Officials informed the meeting that restoration work has gained momentum as floodwaters recede across most affected areas. However, power restoration in some low-lying and severely waterlogged pockets of Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts continues to face minor delays due to restricted access and persistent waterlogging.

According to the DISCOMs, the overall power infrastructure has not suffered any major structural damage. Burnt and failed transformers are being replaced on priority, and repair works are being carried out as soon as ground conditions permit.

Emphasising the need for a speedy yet safe restoration process, the Additional Chief Secretary directed DISCOMs to restore electricity in the remaining affected areas without compromising public or worker safety. He instructed officials to conduct thorough safety inspections before re-energising submerged power lines and installations.

The DISCOMs were also asked to maintain close coordination with district administrations in inaccessible areas and keep the public informed through regular updates on power restoration schedules using media and social media platforms.

The state government reiterated that restoring normal electricity supply while ensuring the safety of residents and field personnel remains a top priority in the ongoing flood response efforts.
