Global South Not Responsible for Climate Crisis, Says Piyush Goyal at CII Partnership Summit 2024

New Delhi: Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, today emphasized the Global South’s minimal role in global environmental damage, attributing the crisis to the developed nations that benefited from low-cost energy in the past. The remarks were made during the inaugural session of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Partnership Summit 2024, held in New Delhi.

Trade Ministers from partner nations including Italy, Israel, Bhutan, Bahrain, Algeria, Nepal, Senegal, South Africa, Myanmar, Qatar, and Cambodia’s Secretary of State for the Ministry of Commerce were in attendance, underscoring the global significance of the summit.

Goyal stressed the principle of “common but differentiated responsibility”, urging that countries’ roles in addressing environmental challenges should be proportional to their contributions to the problem. He highlighted that while global cooperation is essential, developing nations should not bear undue burdens in mitigating climate change and maintaining sustainable supply chains.

The Minister outlined key themes of stability, sustainability, and satellite technology, which dominated discussions among participating nations. He emphasized the need to balance technological advancements, such as Artificial Intelligence and automation, with traditional values and culture, suggesting that empowerment through education and skills is crucial to adapt to future challenges.

Goyal further noted the importance of a circular economy, cautioning against unchecked consumption and waste that exacerbate environmental issues. He called for a conscious approach to carbon footprints and sustainable lifestyles, aligning economic growth with environmental preservation.

The Minister underscored the importance of inclusivity and collaboration for global progress, advocating for initiatives in innovation, infrastructure, investment, and industry. He also highlighted the role of global trade, tourism, and energy as pivotal drivers of economic growth and emphasized India’s commitment to fostering partnerships with the Global South.

Reflecting on India’s global stance, Goyal reiterated the country’s dedication to peace, dialogue, and diplomacy, as championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He called for synergy among partner nations to promote shared goals of peace, prosperity, and sustainability in a world increasingly marked by geopolitical challenges.

The summit serves as a platform to strengthen economic and cultural ties among nations, with India extending a “trusted hand of friendship” to its partners in the Global South. Goyal’s address set a decisive tone for the summit, emphasizing the shared responsibility of creating a sustainable and inclusive future.
